Burned, Bound, and Becoming, an exhibition of works by Adegboyega Arohunmolase and Hannah Kwafo will be on view Friday, November 6 through Friday, November 27, in the main gallery at Catapult Creative House.
Adegboyega Olukunle Arohunmolase is an artist whose material-driven practice fuses African wax print fabric, enameled copper, beads, hot glue, rug tufting, and pyrography with Yoruba language, poetry, performance, and letter writing. He received his MFA in Art Studio from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is currently based at the University of Texas at Austin, where he continues his research.
Hannah Kwafo is an interdisciplinary artist with a deep interest in the intersection of art, ecology and culture. Her work explores the relationship between cultural references, nature and creative expression, and the use of organic materials such as calabash (gourd). Her current research is focused on the Marine and coastal communities from Ghana, in West Africa.
Burned, Bound, and Becoming is a multidisciplinary exhibition about the marks we leave and the marks that leave us changed. Working across pyrography, sculpture, textile processes, and writing, the exhibition traces two entangled stories: the irreversible imprint of human action on fragile ecosystems, and the slow reconstruction of identity in the wake of migration. What burns cannot be unburned. What is bound can hold. What becomes is still becoming.
A reception for Burned, Bound, and Becoming will take place at Catapult on Friday, November 6 from 5-7 p.m.
All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Joni Hand at jhand@semo.edu.
