Aposematism an exhibition of paintings by Lukas Hilsgen and Sea Merlone, will be on view from Friday, November 6 through Friday, November 27 in the Slingshot Gallery at Catapult Creative House.

Lukas Hilsgen is an acrylic painter with a background in digital art, leading to a unique mix of traditional painting with bright colors and sharp shapes. He often depicts sparks of change, or “trigger events” that change the course of one’s life. His pieces in APOSEMATISM highlight these changes across all walks of life.

Sea Merlone is a gouache painter who specializes in natural fauna subjects, imbuing them with vibrant colors and themes. Metallic objects often adorn these creatures; a reminder of humanity’s claws dug into the calm of the world. Their pieces in APOSEMATISM highlight toxic beauty and how it bewitches viewers, hypnotizing them until it is too late.

According to the artists, “APOSEMATISM showcases the complexity of nature by design, as well as the uniqueness of every individual. We have exaggerated animals through saturated colors and geometric, illustrative shapes to emphasize the importance of diversity. In nature, “aposematism” refers to the ability some animals have, via color, shape, or sound, to alert other animals that they should not be attacked or eaten."

"Our works represent overcoming adversity despite the odds. Some pieces center on an individual’s place and how they fit into society’s machine; other works depict the triumph of “prey” over their “predator.” By being exposed to unfamiliar things, one is able to expand their worldview and become more tolerant of change. We hope to inspire those who have ever felt outcasted or lesser-than and encourage them to show their true hue."

An opening reception for Aposematism will take place on Friday, November 6 from 5-7 p.m. in the Slingshot Gallery at Catapult Creative House.
