SEMO Aviation Students Attend Aerospace Expo in Florida

  • STEM

Southeast Missouri State University aviation students expanded their professional horizons this April by attending the prestigious Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo in Lakeland, Florida, one of the nation’s premier aviation events. The annual expo draws aviation professionals, industry leaders and technology innovators from across the country and offers a range of opportunities for career development and networking.

Students at an aerospace expo in Florida.Sun ‘n Fun, known as “Aviation’s Season Opener,” showcases hundreds of aircraft, aviation exhibitors, workshops, seminars and daily airshows that bring together pilots, engineers, recruiters and students.

“Sun ‘n Fun was truly one of the best experiences of my life,” said Madyson Johnson, a double major in professional pilot and aviation management programs at SEMO. “It opened my eyes up to just how big the industry really is.”

SEMO student attendees included members of Alpha Eta Rho, the University’s professional aviation fraternity, and Women in Aviation, a chapter focused on supporting and advancing women in the aerospace field. Participation will allow students to connect directly with industry representatives, explore emerging technologies and attend career fair events designed to link students with potential employers.

“Sun ‘n Fun gives our students an invaluable real‑world learning experience outside the classroom,” said Miranda Sullivan, director of aviation programs at SEMO. “They speak with airline recruiters, observe the latest advancements in aviation technology and built relationships that can lead to future internships and careers.”

Sullivan notes women continue to make significant strides in aviation, and SEMO’s aviation program reflects that trend, averaging 22% female pilot students—one of the higher percentages nationally.
In addition to career development, students attended technical forums and workshops on aircraft maintenance, safety, innovation and aviation leadership.

For SEMO aviation students, the Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo offers both educational and professional momentum as they prepare for careers in a dynamic and evolving industry.

“I would highly recommend students go to Sun ‘n Fun,” said Johnson. “Everyone should go to an airshow at least once in their lifetime. It’s something you’ll never forget.”
