How It Works

Southeast Online uses a variety of instructional tools to facilitate learning in our online courses. You can expect to see content posted as web pages, PowerPoint slides, PDF or Word documents, and video or audio files. There may also be links to other Internet resources and supplemental materials

Online courses typically include one or more discussion forums where classroom conversations occur. The instructor poses a question, and students post their own comments and respond to the comments of others. You will participate within a specified time frame, but you are not typically required to be online at the same time as your classmates or your instructor. This type of course delivery is also called asynchronous.

Welcome to Southeast Online

Online classes at Southeast are designed to give you all the tools you need without ever stepping foot on campus. Each class is designed based on a syllabus and presented online using an easy-to-follow framework. Most fall and spring classes are 16 weeks in length. Occasionally, courses may be offered in four, six or eight week formats. Online courses have start and end dates; they are not independent study courses. You are not required to be online at the same time as the professor or your other classmates.
Our faculty and staff are focused on providing you with the support to reach your goals. Our online advisors will guide you through all of the necessary steps to help you reach the point of enrolling in your first semester.

Advising & Enrolling

You will be assigned an advisor who will be available to help you navigate your academic career. They will help you develop a plan of study, select your online classes, and fill the role of your on-campus advocate.

Every semester your advisor will contact you prior to the enrollment period to help you set your goals for the semester. You will also receive a detailed advising summary outlining the remaining requirements for your degree, recommended classes and other important information that you will need to complete a successful semester. Your advisor is committed to your success and will provide you with the support that you need to be a successful online learner.

How do I get my textbooks?

Undergraduate students can rent the majority of their textbooks each semester. If you are an undergraduate student who is unable to be on campus to rent textbooks, you may use a web form to request textbooks to be shipped to you via UPS. The average course has one rental textbook and some select courses may have no rentals or multiple rentals. A few courses may require that you purchase supplemental textbooks or materials.

Textbooks may be requested as soon as your registration is finalized, but books will NOT ship until closer to the beginning of classes. Please request your books as soon as possible to ensure timely delivery before classes begin and assignments are due.

What does my digital classroom look like?

Southeast uses the Moodle learning system. We highly recommend completing our Demo Class so you can see how our online classes are organized.

How to be a successful online learner

There are three good habits that will help you in becoming a successful online learner:

  1. Read everything. Read your course material, the FAQs, the how-to's and online discussions. It is important to log into class frequently and to check your Southeast email on a regular basis.
  2. Manage your time effectively. Even though you are not required to sit in an actual classroom, schedule time when you will sit and do coursework. Adding assignment and test dates to a calendar can be helpful. It is vital that you accept responsibility for your own learning. The convenience of online course brings increased responsibility for time management.
  3. Use the tools provided. First, make sure your equipment meets the necessary minimum requirements and you need to be computer literate. We try very hard to make sure you have everything you need to be successful-take advantage of these resources. If you have a question or a problem, you need to speak up and get help to ensure your success in the course.
