Our highly competitive graduate program prepares students for a career in speech-language pathology by providing the training needed to earn state license and more.

Successful completion of a master's degree in communication disorders meets the academic requirement for the optional Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

This certification also requires candidates pass a national examination (see Praxis Examination below) as well as complete a supervised clinical fellowship year. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all requirements are met and that appropriate documentation is submitted to receive this national certification.

In the state of Missouri, speech-language pathologists are licensed by the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts. Candidates who have met the requirements for the CCC-SLP awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association are eligible for state licensure. Information regarding application for licensure is available at the Missouri Board of Registration for the Healing Arts.

Most other states also require a license to practice speech-language pathology although requirements may vary from state to state. If you anticipate practicing in a state other than Missouri, information about requirements in other states is available at ASHA. Students wishing to pursue licensure in other states should contact their graduate advisor to discuss.

To be eligible for Missouri state licensure and voluntary national certification offered by ASHA in speech-language pathology, students must pass the Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology. It is recommended that students take this examination near the end of completion of the master's degree.
