Dr. Abram Book, assistant professor and internship coordinator in the Department of Communication Studies and Modern Languages at Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) received the Vernon Gantt Award, recognizing his work to improve his community at the departmental, University and local level.
The Kentucky Communication Association (KCA) presents the Vernon Gantt Award for Distinguished Service annually to educators whose academic career has been committed to improving their communities and making positive change through volunteering, workshops and partnerships. The KCA promotes effective teaching and research within the principles of communication. Book became involved with KCA after an article was published there.
“I was both pleasantly surprised and deeply honored to receive the Vernon Gantt Award,” said Book. “I am profoundly grateful to be part of the ongoing work of the Kentucky Communication Association.”
Book’s recognition comes because of his consistent dedication and leadership within KCA. Known for his eagerness to serve, Book has been instrumental in advancing the organization’s mission.
“Dr. Book has invested an incredible amount of time and energy in the Kentucky Communication Association,” said Dr. Lesli Pace, chair and professor for Communication Studies & Modern Languages and interim chair for English. “This award reflects his commitment to the organization and their appreciation of his efforts.”
Beyond KCA, Book devoted 13 years to higher education, first teaching public speaking and interpersonal communication for six years at Indiana State University. Book's award underscores SEMO's reputation of excellence and dedication on a regional and national scale. His leadership in the Kentucky Communication Association not only brings distinction to the Department of Communication Studies and Modern Languages but also strengthens SEMO's professional network within the communication field.
