If you are taking 300-level or higher classes in mass media, you need a laptop. Laptops are required in the classroom during class time. A MacBook Air or MacBook Pro are preferred devices because of the capacity to produce multimedia projects. Mac devices are also widely used by professionals in the mass media field.

If you prefer a PC, it must be capable of running course-related software, including the full Adobe Creative Suite. The only two 300-level classes that are exempt from this rule are:

  • MC304 Diversity in Communication
  • UI382 History and Philosophy of American Mass Media

Your laptop should meet the following minimum technical specifications:

Specs Macbook air macbook pro Windows
Storage 128 GB 256 GB 16GB
Processor 1.6 GHz 2.0 GHz Processor Intel® Core™ i7-12700H
Memory 8 GB 8 GB 8GB

Tablets are not appropriate substitutes for the device requirement.

Using a laptop in the classroom helps prepare you for your future profession. You can buy your laptop through a variety of retailers, including Apple or the SEMO Bookstore. If you want to use the University's Installment Payment Plan (IPP), buy your laptop through the Bookstore with your student account.

Your laptop is an essential part of the learning experience. You'll use it in class and at home to complete assignments, collaborate with classmates, and develop the storytelling and media production skills employers value. Faculty use technology alongside students to create interactive, hands-on learning opportunities that reflect current practices and trends in the media industry.
