The Southeast Missouri Symphony will present a program of music, Mozart and More!, on March 9 and 10.Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place. Due to capacity limits, patrons are encouraged to reserve their seats early.The program will include several distinctive works by the great classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Also featured will be this years student winners of the Concerto and Aria Competition, Ethan Brown (marimba) and Charles Hrdlicka (clarinet). This years Concerto and Aria Competition attracted 19 student contestants in such areas as voice, French horn, trumpet, flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, violin, cello, string bass and percussion.The program will open with Mozarts energetic and lively Impresario Overture, K. 486. Following the Mozart overture, clarinetist Charles Hrdlicka will perform the expressive Adagio from the Clarinet Concerto by Franz Krommer. The first half of the program will conclude with the majestic and celebrated Allegretto movement from Ludwig van Beethovens famous Symphony No. 7.Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will again be featured when the orchestra performs Mozarts light-hearted, buoyant Symphony No. 29 in A Major. Emmanuel Sjourns contemporary work, Concerto for Marimba and Strings, will be performed by the orchestra with soloist Ethan Brown. An expressive piece with soaring harmonies and melodies, it is captivating to hear in performance.We are very excited about our upcoming Mozart and More! concerts, said Dr. Sara Edgerton, conductor of the Southeast Missouri Symphony. Mozart is such a creative genius, and it is always a pleasure to rehearse and perform his marvelous music. It is also exciting to perform composers who were from a very similar background and time period, Krommer and Beethoven. Though Beethoven and Krommer were both slightly younger than Mozart, there is a wonderful connection and flow amongst the pieces on these concerts that I think everyone will enjoy and appreciate. For complete contrast, the amazing Emmanuel Sjourn concerto will thrill our audiences as well.
