The film worlds favorite ogre shifts to life on stage, proving theres more to the story than meets the eye when Shrek: The Musical is performed Feb. 19-23 at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19-22 and 2 p.m. Feb. 22-23 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall as part of the 2019-2020 Rhodes 101 Stops and Commerce Bank Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance series.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Southeasts Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance will perform Shrek: The Musical, a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs, while still delivering all the beloved characters that audiences remember from the film.

Were thrilled to bring Shrek to the River Campus, said Dr. Kenn Stilson, chair of The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance. Its one of the most iconic movies of the turn of the century, and the story and characters are beloved by fans of all ages. Ive never met anyone who simply doesnt adore the adventures of Shrek and Donkey. Whats not to love? This marks the debut of this musical in the region, and we fully expect it to be this seasons blockbuster hit.

The production, based on the movie, with the book by William Steig and with music by Jeanine Tesori, is the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a jesting donkey and princess who resists her rescue. The show also features a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and numerous other fairy tale misfits.

The musical opens like a storybook with Shrek narrating the story on his seventh birthday. While narrating, the storybook comes to life with Shreks parents telling the seven-year-old version of himself that its time for him to explore the world on his own. His parents warn him that the world will hate him because of his hideous looks, which proves to be true. He ends up living alone in a swamp, but along the way, he grows up and steps out into the story he was once narrating. His lonely world changes when a cast of beloved fairy tale creatures show up in the swamp, and thus Shrek begins a hilarious, but meaningful, adventure.

Shrek: The Musical is fun for the whole family.
