Beginning Feb. 9, Exhibiting Excellence, the 42ndAnnual High School Art Exhibition, an invitational juried art exhibit for 11thand 12thgrade students in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois, will be displayed in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus.

An opening reception in which this years exhibit will be unveiled, is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. Feb. 9, with an awards ceremony beginning at 3 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through March 15, and admission is free.

The high school exhibit is a great exhibit showcasing the amazing talent of our local students, said Jim Phillips, museum manager and senior curator. Their artwork is a testament to their abilities and skills, as well as the dedication and encouragement of their teachers. Its a must-see exhibition for our community.

First-, second- and third-place awards will be presented in the categories of sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media, photography, fibers, drawing and painting. Additionally, Art Academy and Best of Show Awards will be presented. The recipient of the Studio Visual Art Award will receive a scholarship to attend the Universitys summer Studio of Visual Art workshop, and the recipient of the Best in Show Award will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend Southeast as an art major.

The exhibition is a great opportunity for young artists to display their work and get professional and local recognition, said Carol Horst, event organizer and area head of art education at Southeast.

The exhibition is an opportunity for young, talented students to showcase their artwork in a professional setting while getting recognition and constructive critiques for their creative endeavors, she said. Family, friends and teachers also can celebrate the students hard work and encourage their future artistic abilities.

This years juror will be Dr. Joni Hand, associate professor of art history at Southeast. Hand is a practicing artist, working in mixed media, oils and graphite. Her current work explores physical and metaphysical journeys. She leads the viewer on pilgrimages through the objects, images or drawings she incorporates into each piece. The destination of each trip is different for each viewer and for each time the work is viewed. She lives in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, with her husband Kevin.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design from Kent State University, a Master of Arts in painting from Bradley University, a Master of Arts in art history from Hunter College of the City University of New York and a doctorate in art history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her research concerns late medieval manuscripts in northern Europe and female patronage. Her work has appeared in several publications, including Women, Manuscripts, and Identity in Northern Europe, 1350-1550 (Ashgate, 2013) and Bound for the Midwest: Medieval and Early Modern Religious Manuscripts in the Charles Luce Harrison Collection, Kent Library, Southeast Missouri State University (Southeast Missouri State University Press, 2017).
