International Orientation
International Student Orientation is designed to help you get acquainted with and succeed at Southeast.
The program, along with other ongoing services offered on campus, enables students to feel welcome and comfortable.
It is mandatory that all international students new to Southeast, including students transferring to Southeast from another U.S. institution, attend the International Student Orientation.
Orientation helps new students learn how the University works, find and use resources, and meet fellow students and University staff who play an important role during students' time here. During International Student Orientation, students will also get advised and enrolled in their courses, if not enrolled prior to arrival.
To 'check-in' you need your I-20 / DS-2019 and passport
At the 'Check-In' event, students will receive a checklist to:
- Get their photo ID card
- Get the required TB Test (and meningitis vaccination, if needed)
- Print and scan their immigration documents
- Register with SEVIS
- Access the Portal and update your local address, telephone number, and emergency contact information. Present any pending documents that were not previously submitted. This may include a final transcript, degree certificate, or diploma. You must do so promptly upon arrival to avoid any delays in enrolling in the course.
- Learn about banking options, health insurance, and undergraduate placement testing for Math and English courses (if applicable)
Summer (June), Fall (October), and Spring (March)
For the IEP-only orientations: Summer Semester (June), Fall Semester (October), and Spring Semester (March), the 'Check-In' will be at the International Village Administration Building.
Fall Semester (August) and Spring Semester (January)
The 'Check-In' event for the Fall Semester (August) and Spring Semester (January) is held in the International Village Administration Building from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Graduate students and Intensive English Programs students should begin to arrive at 9 a.m., and Undergraduate students should begin to arrive at 10 a.m. The 'Check-In' event will allow students to take care of many necessary items-- please allow for 1-2 hours to complete the 'Check-In' checklist. Lunch will be provided at the event.
There will be International Orientation Ambassadors along with other student volunteers and OIES staff to help students complete their 'Check-In' checklist on the first day of orientation, and they will continue to help out throughout the week of orientation.
A one-time "New International Student" fee of $200 will be charged to your student account upon arrival. All Southeast international students are required to pay this one-time fee, and the money is used by the Office of International Education & Services to support international students during orientation and all phases of their academic career at Southeast.
Course Enrollment
During International Student Orientation, undergraduate students will complete math and English placement testing before attending the academic advising session. Students with transfer credit for math and/or English or official SAT scores may be exempt from testing.
Graduate students and non-degree visiting or exchange students may enroll in classes after admission to the University and after consulting the assigned academic advisor or graduate program coordinator stated in your admission letter. You are still required to attend International Student Orientation, but you will be exempt from the academic advising session.
If you did not submit your official final transcript and official graduation certificate or diploma before your departure, you must submit these documents before enrolling in classes.
