Mentoring and Coaching Support

You've got the drive, we've got the support to keep you moving forward.

At SEMO, you’ve got a whole team behind you ready to help you stay on track and find your rhythm. Whether you need advice on classes, a chance to refocus, or a boost of confidence to keep moving forward, we’re here for it. We find student success through academic coaching, faculty mentors, peer advisor support, and multiple opportunities to get back on track.

Peer Advisors

Peer Advising at SEMO allows you to have a supportive academic relationship with another student. The program helps you from day one by talking with someone who has recently been where you are.

Mentoring and Coaching Support

The Academic Coaching Program (ACP) is a two-semester process that helps first-year students with individualized support to achieve their academic goals.

Entrance into ACP is controlled through the Office of Admissions as part of admission to the University. Students admitted to the University through ACP may enroll as degree-seeking, full-time students while also working with an academic success coach to:

  • Identify your learning/thinking styles
  • Capitalize on your strengths and capabilities
  • Develop new academic skills and strategies
  • Create action steps to achieve goals
  • Recognize your successes, identify challenges, and develop/adapt strategies to succeed

Common coaching topics include:

  • Study strategies
  • Note-taking strategies
  • Time management
  • Stress management
  • School, work, life balance
  • Connecting to campus resources
  • Building Resiliency

Redhawk Refresh is for students who have found themselves on Beginning or Continued Probation. You'll be paired with a staff mentor who will provide you with information and guidance.

Your Staff Mentor will appear in SupportNET under the "Staff Mentor" role.

What is Beginning Probation?

Beginning Probation is the action taken if your GPA drops below 2.0. You'll be limited to 12 credit hours in the fall or spring, or 6 credit hours in the summer. This will help you focus on improving your academic status while keeping full-time hours.

You are not in trouble. You can do this! Your mentor will help you find and utilize resources to help you get your GPA back up. The quickest way is to repeat courses where you've received a D or an F. And we'll be there to help you!

What is Continued Probation?

Continued Probation is the continuation of probation if your cumulative GPA is below 2.0, but you're making progress in improving your future semester GPA to improve your overall GPA.

You will still have a mentor to help you toward your goal of a 2.0 GPA or higher in your next semester.

Redhawk Refocus is for students who have been readmitted from Academic Suspension or Academic Disqualification. You will be assigned to a Redhawk Refocus Mentor to help you get back on track.

Your Redhawk Refocus Mentor will appear in SupportNET under the "Redhawk Refocus Mentor" role.

What is Academic Suspension?

Academic Suspension happens when a student on academic probation earns less than a 2.0 semester GPA during their next semester.

If you're suspended, you will receive information from the Registrar's Office about appealing and the deadline to appeal. You will not be eligible to attend SEMO for one semester unless you're approved through the appeal process.

What is Academic Disqualification?

Academic Disqualification happens when a student who has been academically suspended and did not achieve a semester GPA of at least 2.0, and their cumulative GPA remains below the 2.0 threshold.

If you are academically disqualified, you will not be eligible to return in the next semester, and you will have to appeal before being considered for readmission.

Upon readmission from Academic Disqualification, you will be on the Redhawk Refocus plan and will have a mentor to help you.

Availability and willingness to help are two things that make SEMO faculty great. As an incoming student, I was a bit unsure whether or not a science degree was the right fit for me; however, after meeting and building mentor/mentee relationships with a number of the faculty in the Chemistry department, I quickly realized I had made a good choice and found my fit.
