Find Funding
Continue to main contentExternal funding is available for many ideas and activities, including academic research, educational programs, community / student services, artistic performances, museum exhibits, new technology and product testing, conferences, and curriculum development.
Funding through direct federal grants is easily accessible through websites. Below are the most common federal systems for searching for grant funding.
Grants.gov
All direct federal funding opportunities are required to be posted on Grants.gov. This is a fully searchable system, and you can view historical funding opportunities to see what funding will be available in the next few years. Applications are also submitted through Grants.gov, so if you find a funding opportunity you would like to apply for, please contact grants@semo.edu, and staff will initiate an application for you.
Research.gov
All funding opportunities for the National Science Foundation (NSF) are available on Research.gov. If you do not currently have a profile for the system, please contact grants@semo.edu, and staff will assist with creating a user profile and connecting it with SEMO's institutional profile. After a profile is created, principal investigators (PIs) can initiate an application to a funding opportunity. Please remember to share your application in Research.gov through the share with SPO (sponsored programs office) function in the left menu.
ASSIST/eRA Commons
Public Health Service agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funding opportunities that are posted in this system, and applications are submitted using ASSIST.
JustGrants
The Department of Justice (DOJ) uses the JustGrants system to apply for research (NIJ) and programmatic funding support. Applications are initiated through Grants.gov and then transferred to JustGrants to complete the full application packet. If you have issues accessing the system, please contact grants@semo.edu for assistance.

Funding for Results (FFR)
The Funding for Results (FFR) program provides a mechanism to fund those strategic initiatives having to do with the enhancement of teaching and learning. Proposals are requested in a standard grant proposal format and are reviewed by a Funding for Results team in the standard manner in which grants are normally reviewed. There are three categories of competitive grants: Demonstration, Implementation, and Core Continuing. FFR funds support two other types of activities: University Initiative projects and the Student Professional Development Fund. For complete information on the FFR Program, please see the University Provost's website.
Grants and Research Funding Committee (GRFC)
The Grants and Research Funding Committee is a legislative committee of the Faculty Senate, and is comprised of rotating faculty members representing each Academic College / School and Kent Library. The goal of the Grants and Research Funding Committee is to "encourage the growth of scholarly and creative activity at Southeast Missouri State University." GRFC Guidelines (2018).
