Southeast Missouri State University’s (SEMO) Master of Arts in history is expanding its offerings to provide students with the option to complete the degree fully online.
The new online option provides greater flexibility for students seeking to advance their education in history while balancing other personal and professional commitments, allowing students to complete their coursework remotely without requiring in-person attendance on campus.
“That flexibility is very distinct,” said Dr. Adam Criblez, chair of the Department of Anthropology, History and Political Science at SEMO. “We provide an individually tailored educational experience for each student, adapting to their needs to best serve their desired outcome.”
The Master of Arts in history program is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in historical research, analysis and communication. Students in the program work directly with primary sources and archival materials to develop and defend original research that culminates in a completed thesis, advanced project, teaching practicum, or capstone.
The fully online option expands access to the program for students who may not be able to relocate to Cape Girardeau or attend traditional in-person courses. It also provides working professionals, educators and other students with an opportunity to pursue graduate study on a schedule that better fits their needs. In addition to the fully online option, students can now pursue a hybrid course schedule that combines online and in-person classes.

The Master of Arts in history can prepare graduates for a variety of careers and further educational opportunities, including roles in education, public history, museums, archives, government and related fields. The program also can provide a foundation for students interested in pursuing doctoral study.
