Cape Girardeau will welcome families from across the region September 25-26 as Southeast Missouri State University hosts its annual family weekend, a tradition that brings visitors to the community to celebrate their students and experience all the region has to offer.
Family Weekend festivities include:
- An evening of classics with the SEMO Symphony Orchestra at Pops in the Park.
- A guided Stargazing observation at the Vollink Observatory.
- Tours of the iconic Academic Hall Dome.
- A Day on the River hosted by the Cape County Conservation Nature Center at the Riverfront Park.
- Family Weekend Fair hosted by the SEMO Student Activities Council featuring a petting zoo, ax throwing and snacks.
- A Family Picnic with President and Mrs. Hodson.
“Family Weekend is an opportunity for our college students to invite their families to campus and share their SEMO experience,” said Michele Irby, director of Campus Life at SEMO. “We hope our students walk their families around campus, show them their favorite places in Cape Girardeau and participate in a variety of events and activities to engage in our SEMO community.”
The weekend will culminate with the SEMO vs. University of West Florida football game on Saturday, September 26 at 6 p.m. at Houck Stadium. Two hours before kickoff, the Redhawk Walk begins. The SEMO Marching Band, Redhawk Cheerleaders, and Sundancers lead the team to Houck Field and fans line Smallwood-Williams Way to cheer the team and wish them well.
