For Isaac Thorn, a passion for music and teaching is turning into a career. After years of performing and leading ensembles at Southeast Missouri State University, Thorn will take the podium as assistant band director at Wentzville Middle School and Holt High School.
Thorn, of O’Fallon, Missouri, will graduate this spring from SEMO with a degree in instrumental music education.
He said his time at SEMO helped him build confidence not only as a musician, but as a teacher and leader.
“I took advantage of every opportunity to lead as a student, take ownership of my learning and gain experience in the classroom,” Thorn said. “I’ve grown as a trombonist, conductor and teacher before even starting my first job.”
I'M INTERESTED IN MUSIC EDUCATION
That preparation included conducting the Show Band, performing at Music Hall in Cincinnati and serving as a student assistant for the SEMO Marching Band.
One experience, however, stands above the rest.

In 2023, the SEMO Marching Band was selected to perform in exhibition at the Bands of America competition in Indianapolis, marking the first time in program history.
“The opportunity to play on a world stage was truly special, and it gave every rehearsal deep meaning,” Thorn said. “I’ll never forget looking out onto the field at Lucas Oil Stadium, seeing the massive crowd and feeling the stillness of the air as we took our places to perform.”
For Thorn, moments like that reinforced his passion for music education and the impact it can have on students.
Originally inspired by volunteering with children’s ministry at his church, he said teaching has always been a natural extension of his love for music.
Now, as he prepares to begin his career in the classroom, Thorn said he feels ready to guide the next generation of musicians.
“Without SEMO, I wouldn’t have the extensive hands-on experience to prepare me for job interviews and, ultimately, my first year of teaching,” he said.
At Southeast Missouri State University, music education students gain hands-on experience leading ensembles and working directly with students, preparing them to step confidently into classrooms and rehearsal spaces from day one. Learn more at semo.edu/arts-media.
