Southeast Missouri State University’s Engineering Physics, Industrial & Systems Engineering, and Engineering Technology programs have once again earned reaccreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
This reaccreditation highlights nearly five decades of SEMO’s commitment to excellence in engineering and technology education. The University first achieved ABET accreditation in 1976, and its newest program, Industrial & Systems Engineering, received initial accreditation in 2021. All accredited programs have been granted a full six-year reaccreditation, underscoring their quality and rigorous academic standards.
“This is evidence of the hard work our faculty, students, and industrial advisory board members have done to build these high-quality programs,” said SEMO President Dr. Carlos Vargas.
ABET accreditation is a meticulous process, requiring extensive self-assessment and external evaluation including a formal visit to our facilities by the ABET team. SEMO faculty regularly assess the curriculum and ensure that students are meeting program objectives. The department also collaborates with an industrial advisory board that monitors student learning outcomes to maintain the relevance and effectiveness of the curriculum. ABET assigns an accreditation team to visit SEMO and evaluate the department’s programs. The accreditation process alone can take an entire year.

ABET accreditation is recognized as a benchmark of quality in both engineering and technology education. Many licensing boards in the U.S., including Missouri, require applicants to graduate from an ABET-accredited program to become licensed professional engineers.
