The Arrow, the student newspaper of Southeast Missouri State University, won a combined 26 awards at the 2024 Missouri Broadcast Educators Association (MBEA)/Missouri College Media Association (MCMA) Conference April 6 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Among the Arrow’s awards were seven first-place awards, including MCMA Division 2 Best Overall Newspaper recognition. Students also continued their dominance in the MCMA Advertising Division, winning first place in Best Campus Engagement/Promotion for DoNOT Stress, a pre-finals engagement event held last spring.
The Arrow also won MCMA first-place awards for Investigative Reporting, News Photography and News Writing, Best Photo Page and Best Video. Arrow staffers won an additional seven second-place and seven third-place MCMA awards, and four honorable mentions.
“Emma Kratky has been a transformational leader for the staff as editor-in-chief, and the proof is in the diversity of the awards received,” said Dr. Tamara Zellars Buck, multimedia journalism professor and chairperson of the Department of Mass Media. “The students are excelling in categories across the board, and this is a testament to her leadership.”
In the MBEA contest, the Arrow brought home two third-place awards for sports coverage videos this year. Senior multimedia journalism major Kate Haussman and senior advertising major Hunter Caldwell were recognized for the video “Walk Houck Field with Brady Barke” in the Hard News category. Sophomore multimedia journalism majors Blake Schowalter and Beto Vaca Diez were recognized in the Sports Show category for their Two Minute Warning show segment “Zach Wilson is.... good? UFC 296, and Ohtani's MASSIVE deal TMW (11)”
