OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ADVISOR AWARDS

One professional and one faculty advisor is chosen every year to be recognized as an Outstanding Academic Advisor. The award winners are then nominated for the National Academic Advising Association’s (NACADA) Outstanding Advising Award.  

“Our Outstanding Academic Advisor award winners, year in and year out, are advisors who truly put their students’ needs first,” said Amanda Eller, director of Academic Advising. “Andrea Thompson and Nicholas Kenney are two advisors who go above and beyond in their jobs every single day and guide our students in their academic paths.”

• Outstanding Professional Advisor – Andrea Thompson

Andrea Thompson has been with Southeast Online since January 2014. She serves as an Online Program Specialist and advises for several degree paths.

• Outstanding Faculty Advisor – Nicholas A. Kenney

Nicholas Kenney is an associate professor of horn and assistant director of bands at Southeast, serving as a faculty advisor. He advises music degree seeking students and those wishing to be a part of an ensemble.   

TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

The Awards for Teaching Excellence recognize Southeast faculty who have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional teaching and student success. Nominations and award winners span across six categories and recognize faculty from a number of disciplines across campus.

“It is so important to recognize all the incredible work our faculty members have done over the last year,” said provost Mike Godard. “Southeast continues to be home to innovative and successful faculty who are leading the way in research and student success. The winners this year are great examples of the quality of our Southeast faculty.”

• Excellence in Teaching Innovation – Stephanie Hallam 

The Excellence in Teaching Innovation Award goes to a faculty member who demonstrates a keen awareness of the needs of students. They showcase how their teaching practice or program design promotes flexible and innovative learning. Stephanie Hallam is an educational information librarian with Kent Library 

• Excellence in Experiential Teaching – Steven Stovall

The Excellence in Experiential Teaching Award goes to a faculty member who employs several high-impact practices in their instruction and fosters growth in students through an increased ability to learn and apply the knowledge, skills, and concepts needed for success. Steven Stovall is an assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship. 

• Excellence in Student Mentorship – David Tomchuk

The Excellence in Student Mentorship Award is given to a faculty member who puts forth extraordinary efforts to increase student success through meaningful academic experiences. They provide support and advising beyond the scheduling of courses and participate in professional development as it relates to student success. David Tomchuk is an assistant professor of kinesiology, nutrition and recreation.

• Excellence in Supporting Undergraduate Research – Susan Fulton 

The Excellence in Supporting Undergraduate Research goes to a faculty member who instills an understanding and appreciation of research at the undergraduate level. They demonstrate that they have established a strong mentoring relationship with their undergraduate mentees and support and challenge them with engaging research in their disciplines. Susan Fulton is an associate professor of communication disorders.

• Excellence in Supporting Graduate Research – Kelley Fritz

The Excellence in Supporting Graduate Research goes to a faculty member who helps build and develop research skills and a passion for research in graduate education. They demonstrate excellence in supporting graduate research and establish strong mentorship relationships with students. Kelley Fritz is an assistant professor of biology.

• Excellence in the Assessment of Student Learning – Dr. Larry Bohannon

The Excellence in the Assessment of Student Learning Award is given to a faculty member who demonstrates best practices by developing meaningful assessments that lead to student success and that inform teaching practices. Larry Bohannon is a professor of elementary, early, and special education.

• Graduate Teaching Assistant Award – Connor Anderson 

The Graduate Teaching Assistant Award is given to a graduate student who demonstrates excellence in teaching. They are also currently enrolled and have had teaching responsibilities at Southeast for at least two semesters. Connor Anderson is a criminal justice graduate assistant. 

• Excellence in Online Teaching – Joseph Snyder

The Excellence in Online Teaching Award recognizes a faculty member who champions online learning. They demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge in online learning from the global perspective and the individual online course best practices. The winner also shows evidence of scholarship and research in the field. Joseph Snyder is an assistant professor of history and anthropology.

• Excellence in Teaching General Education – Beth Adkins

The Excellence in Teaching General Education Award recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates extraordinary efforts to engage students in their learning. They have exemplary commitment to supporting student success and are innovative in their teaching methods. Beth Adkins is an instructor in history and anthropology.
