The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus will host a number of activities, including two art competitions during the River Campus Summer Arts Festival on June 15.

The Museum will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., during which visitors will have the opportunity to compete in plein air and street painting events.

The plein air contest will feature two categories landscape/cityscape and portrait/narrative. Painters ages 10 and up must start and complete their pieces on the River Campus grounds between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A registration fee of $10 per piece is required and may be made payable by cash or personal check to Crisp Museum at signup. Refunds are not available.

Artists are asked to furnish their own supplies. Accepted mediums include oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel chalk.

Artists may submit up to two works in the plein air contest that must be stamped on the back. The stamp, available at the Museum front desk, is required for judging. Finished pieces must be turned in to Crisp Museum by 3 p.m., when judging will begin. Framing is not required. Winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m., and cash awards — $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place — will be given in two categories.

The street painting chalk avenue of art will begin at 10 a.m. and is free for all ages to participate. Artists may enter the competition on the day of the festival. Children under six may participate but their artwork will not be judged. Entries will be judged by Professional Street Painter Craig Thomas.

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum, Thomas also will create his own piece during the festival.

Sidewalk chalk artists will be given a box of 24 soft pastels and a concrete space of up to six feet by six feet to create their respective entries. Images must be contained within that square.

Participants are encouraged to wear a hat and sunscreen and to bring an image or rendering with them from which to work. Other recommended supplies that participants should consider bring are a yardstick, tape measure and chalk line, latex gloves, a pillow, carpet square or kneeling pad, kneepads, water and additional pastels if necessary. Judging will take place at 3 p.m

Cash prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Ages 6-12 ($25)
  • Ages 13-17 ($25)
  • Ages 18 and over ($25)
  • Best summer theme.

Throughout the day, visitors to the Museum are encouraged to enjoy a Department of Art and Media faculty exhibition, selections from the permanent collection on display in the lobby, artifact touch tables and craft demonstrations. Fault Line Film Festival previews also will be shown.

In addition, Chartwells will provide food and drinks, which will be available for purchase.
