The Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Association will present Nicholas K. Maddock with the Distinguished Young Alumni Award at the All-Alumni Breakfast held during Southeasts Homecoming weekend. The breakfast is scheduled for 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in the Aleen Vogel Wehking Alumni Center. This the first time the Distinguished Young Alumni Award has been presented. The award honors an individual alumnus or alumna under the age of 37 for their outstanding service to and support of the University.A Washington, D.C., resident, Maddock is employed by Capital One as a caf launch manager, where he travels the United States facilitating the launch processes for new Capital One cafes. He began working with Capital One in June 2014 as a Financial Analyst and took the reins in his current role in January of this year.I am unbelievably grateful for being recognized as this years Distinguished Young Alumni award recipient, Maddock said. My hope, however, is that this can be viewed not so much as a testament to what I have accomplished or given back to the University since graduating, but more so as a testament to how well Southeast Missouri State alumni, faculty and staff have prepared me for such success throughout my undergraduate career. From the alumni who awarded me scholarships to allow me to graduate debt free to the dozens of mentors I have had throughout my time at Southeast, this is their award, not mine.Bill Holland, vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the Southeast Missouri University Foundation, said, Nick has been highly engaged with the University as a student and as an alum. He has set a great example of how alumni can give back in order for the University to remain strong into the future.Capital One hired Maddock through an LGBT Business Conference run by the Out for Undergrad Organization, in which he has served as a volunteer as Operations Manager and Alumni Team Lead.Shortly after joining Capital One, Maddock was also one of only 50 public citizens in 2015 to attend the Obergefell v. Hodges' Supreme Court hearing that ultimately legalized gay marriage across the United States.Maddock prepared for this advocacy role during his time at Southeast. As a member of the LGBT community, he fought for equal treatment of the LGBT community by pushing for more inclusive policies and resources at Southeast; sponsoring Student Government legislation to add non-discrimination clauses based on sexual orientation and gender identity to University policies; and advocating for an LGBT resource center. Due, in part, to his efforts to enhance the LGBT community at the University, he was honored with the Civic Engagement award at the 2014 Student Life and Leadership Awards banquet. He also served in other leadership roles at Southeast, including Student Government treasurer, Interfraternity Council president, Finance and Economics Society president, director of Greek Week 2013, a three-year Resident Assistant and several leadership positions in his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha.Maddock graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southeast in spring 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in economics and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in finance and management, entrepreneurship option.Since graduating from Southeast, Maddock has established two scholarships with the Southeast Missouri University Foundation. He established the Nicholas K. Maddock LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Ally Scholarship in November 2014 to motivate others to get involved in enhancing the LGBT community at Southeast and beyond through leadership, involvement and political change. The scholarship is awarded to students of any major with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Freshmen may also apply who have a minimum 3.0 high school grade point average. Applicants must submit a short essay demonstrating how they have enhanced the LGBT community at Southeast (or their high school for incoming freshmen). In addition, he established the Kevin J. Maddock International Studies Scholarship in May of this year. The scholarship is awarded to students with a minimum 2.50 grade point average. Applicants must be approved for or seeking an international study experience. Maddock says his love for travel inspired him to establish the scholarship because he believes experiencing the world in different facets allowed him to be a well-rounded individual. He endowed the international studies scholarship to help other students do the same.
