Two viewing parties are planned in connection with TEDxSoutheastMissouriStateUniversity an event designed to spark deep discussion on Diverse Passions on Thursday, March 3, in Cape Girardeau.
On March 3 at 7 p.m., KRCU will host a livestream viewing party at The Broadway Federal located at 339 Broadway in Cape Girardeau. Light refreshments will be available, and the party is free and open to the public. Registration is available at www.krcu.org/TEDx.
The only on-campus viewing party will be sponsored by two communication studies student organizations COMMrades and Lambda Pi Eta. The viewing party on March 3 will take place in the University Center Ballroom B. Doors open at 6 p.m. Attendees will be seated at tables of eight with a group leader from one of the student organizations leading discussions similar to those taking place at the main event. Limited space is available, so reservations can be made by emailing Jeanne Harris in the Department of Communications Studies at jharris@semo.edu.
The event will be live streamed for anyone to access at www.OVCdigitalnetwork.com. The livestream is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Divisions of Academic Affairs, Finance & Administration, and Enrollment Management and Student Success at Southeast.
The main event, TEDxSoutheastMissouriStateUniversity, is scheduled for 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) March 3, in the Aleen Vogel Wehking Alumni Center. The viewing parties are being offered since the event itself is limited to 100 attendees 50 community members and 50 students.
Various professors at Southeast will be speaking about their diverse passions. Speakers include Dr. Allen Gathman, professor of biology and dean of online learning, discussing human genetic diversity versus the social constructs of race; Dr. Kenneth Heischmidt, professor in the Department of Management and Marketing and director of the MBA program, discussing how each graduate is one in a million both literally and figuratively; Dr. Debra Lee-Distefano, professor in the Department of Global Cultures and Languages, discussing the issues with assumptions regarding who is from or belongs where; and Dr. Tamara Zellars Buck, associate professor of mass media, discussing how minorities are portrayed in the media.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
