The ensembles will perform for three jazz experts who will give them written and recorded comments as well as a live clinic session. The bands will perform from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeasts River Campus.
Admission is free to this daytime event.
Bands attending will include the award-winning Cape Central High School, North County High School, DeSoto High School, Dexter High School, Woodland High School, Kelly High School, Potosi High School, Northwest High School, Hillsboro High School, Seckman High School, Jefferson City High School, Fredericktown High School, Bismarck High School as well as junior high bands from Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, Hillsboro and Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.
Capping events Feb. 5, Southeast Missouri State University Department of Music will present its second concert of the 2015-2016 Jazz Series featuring world-renowned jazz trumpeter Bob Lark, chair of the jazz studies program at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. The annual gala concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall and will feature Lark in performance with Southeasts Studio Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band.
Lark is an exclusive Yamaha Performing Artist. He directs DePaul Universitys Jazz Ensemble and The Phil Woods Ensemble, and teaches jazz trumpet and courses in jazz pedagogy, jazz history and jazz style. Under his direction, The DePaul University Jazz Ensemble has received several Outstanding Performance Awards from the Jazz Educators Journal, Down Beat and Jazz Times magazines. Lark has recorded albums with legendary jazz artists Phil Woods, Rufus Reid, Clark Terry, Louie Bellson, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely, Jeff Hamilton, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell, Ira Sullivan, Mark Colby, Bobby Shew and Frank Wess.
The Southeast chapter of Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity handles all of the logistics of this event, including guiding bands from warmup to performance, handling collection of adjudication data, audio recording of each ensemble, as well as setup and teardown before and after each group. This is an annual service project for this fraternity which benefits the University as well as the surrounding community.
