As part of Southeast Missouri State University’s Show Me Home video series, President Brad Hodson had the opportunity to visit Benton alongside one of our students, Allie Daniel, a proud Redhawk who grew up in the community. Together, they explored the people, places, and traditions that make Benton a place worth calling home.
Where the Ridge Meets the Delta in Benton, Missouri
While Benton itself is a small community, it sits in a region rich with agricultural tradition and historical significance. Scott County’s fertile soils and proximity to the Mississippi River helped shape its development, with farming, transportation, and commerce driving local growth for generations.
Part of what makes Benton distinctive is its location at the intersection of two very different landscapes. The community sits near Crowley’s Ridge, a unique geological formation that rises unexpectedly above the flat Mississippi Alluvial Plain that surrounds much of southeast Missouri. Stretching through portions of Missouri and Arkansas, the ridge provides rolling hills, wooded scenery, and elevated viewpoints that stand in stark contrast to the fertile farmland below.
That combination of ridge and river bottom has helped shape the region’s identity for generations. Rich agricultural soils made farming a cornerstone of the local economy, while the higher ground of Crowley’s Ridge offers a landscape unlike anywhere else in the region.
Today, Benton benefits from both influences, combining the productivity of the Delta with the natural beauty and distinct character of the ridge region. Within just a few miles, you’ll find expansive farmland giving way to wooded hillsides, creating a landscape that’s as diverse as the community itself.
Benton, Missouri: A Town Built on History
Benton’s story stretches back more than 200 years. The town was officially laid out in 1822 and became the county seat of Scott County shortly after Missouri achieved statehood. It was named for Thomas Hart Benton, one of Missouri’s earliest and most influential U.S. senators. The city remains the county seat today, serving as an important center of civic life in southeast Missouri.
Unlike communities that have lost touch with their origins, Benton embraces its rural character while continuing to evolve. It’s a place where local businesses still serve as gathering spots and where community connections remain strong.

Thomas W. Kelly High School: A Source OF BENTON Community Pride
No story about Benton would be complete without mentioning Thomas W. Kelly High School, home of the Kelly Hawks. Serving students throughout the Scott County R-IV School District, the school is a focal point for the community. Friday night games, school events, and community celebrations all reinforce the connection between the school and the town it serves.
For Allie Daniel, Kelly High School is where her journey began. The encouragement she found there gave her the confidence to pursue her goals at SEMO, where she’s continuing to build on the foundation her hometown helped create.
M Kay Supply: More Than a Hardware Store
One of Benton’s most distinctive local businesses is M Kay Supply. At first glance, visitors might expect a traditional farm and hardware store. Step inside, however, and you’ll discover one of the community’s favorite gathering places. Founded to provide a one-stop destination for farm, hardware, home, and outdoor products, it has become much more than a retail store.
Perhaps the biggest surprise for first-time visitors is its deli and café. Known for fresh sandwiches, homemade favorites, and warm hospitality, it’s the kind of place where customers often stay to catch up with friends after picking up supplies. It’s not every day you walk into a farm supply store and leave talking about lunch, but that’s exactly what makes M Kay Supply a Benton favorite.
Fun Fact: Dr. Hodson actually learned about M Kay through the recommendation of Missouri’s Governor! After visiting himself, Dr. Hodson says it’s one of his favorite restaurants in southeast Missouri!
