What is the SEMO Math Lab?

  • Conquering College

At SEMO, you don’t have to figure it out alone! The Math Lab has resources available to help you every step of the way. It exists for one reason: to support you in the way you learn best.

A College Math Resource Built Around You

The Math Lab is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s not a “figure it out yourself” environment.

Instead, you’ll find a space designed to meet you where you are whether that’s reviewing a single concept or building confidence across an entire course.

What you can expect:

  • Free support for all enrolled SEMO students
  • Walk-in access or scheduled appointments through SupportNET
  • Multiple locations, including Johnson Hall and Kent Library
  • Flexible help—work independently or side-by-side with a learning assistant

You’re in control of how you use it.

Real students. Real understanding. Real Academic Support.

When you walk into the Math Lab, you’re not just getting help; you’re working with people who’ve been where you are.

Learning assistants are SEMO students who have already taken and succeeded in the same math courses you are tackling now, from college algebra to calculus and statistics. These students understand when material is confusing, a test doesn’t go as planned, or homework takes longer than expected.

The students make sure every session is designed to build lasting skills, like how to read a problem, set up your work, check your reasoning, using campus math help resources with confidence. The Math Lab supports you well beyond one homework set, exam, or semester.

What a Math Lab Session Actually Looks Like

Every math tutoring session is unique. You’ll begin by sharing your needs, then build a plan with your learning assistant.

That could mean:

  • Breaking down a difficult concept
  • Working through homework step-by-step
  • Preparing for an upcoming exam
  • Identifying patterns in what you’re missing

You’re learning how to approach problems with confidence.

More Than Just “When You’re Struggling”

One of the biggest misconceptions about getting help with your college math coursework?
You should only go to the Math Lab when things are going wrong.

High-performing students:

  • Show up early
  • Ask questions sooner
  • Use support to stay ahead

There’s no reward for doing everything on your own, but there is a difference in outcomes when you know how to ask for help. The Math Lab at SEMO is a free math tutoring resource, so you can be supported in every step of your academic journey.

Support Across Your Math Courses

The Math Lab officially supports all 100- and 200-level math courses, including:

  • Developmental math
  • Precalculus
  • Calculus
  • Statistics

And if you’re in a higher-level course? Still ask. The team will always find a way to help or connect you to someone who can.

You won’t hear “no.” You’ll hear “let’s figure it out.” No student in search of academic support will be turned away.

A Space Designed to Work for You

The Johnson Hall Math Lab location offers an open, flexible environment:

  • Check yourself in and get to work
  • Use available computers
  • Ask questions when you need them
  • Sit down for one-on-one help

Even math professors spend time in the lab each week, giving you another layer of support when you need it. Whatever you are going through, whether it be math anxiety, final exam preparation, or homework struggles, the Math Lab is made to support you.

How Do I Get the Most Out of the Math Lab?

To make your time count:

  • Attend your classes
  • Attempt your homework
  • Bring your notes, materials, and questions

The more you bring to the session, the more you’ll get out of it.

Start Before You Need It

You don’t have to wait until you’re stuck.

Stop in. Look around. Ask questions. Stay for five minutes or an hour.

The Math Lab is here to help you move forward—with clarity, confidence, and momentum.

Take the Next Step College Math Success

Walk in. Schedule a session. Start small. But start. The difference between getting by and getting ahead often comes down to one decision: choosing to use the support that’s already here for you.
