In the family and consumer science education program students will increase their ability to act responsibly and productively, work cooperatively, apply concepts of balancing school/work and family, create solutions to critical and emergent issues, utilize technology effectively in personal and family settings, and maintain healthy lifestyles. Family consumer sciences (FCS) education provides the bridge needed by all students to deal with life and career issues (*AAFCS Rationale).
Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) teachers help students build practical skills they'll use for the rest of their lives. At SEMO, you'll prepare to teach topics like child development, nutrition, personal finance, family relationships, housing, fashion, and consumer decision-making while earning your Missouri K-12 teaching certification. As a family and consumer sciences education major, you’ll learn to teach a variety of subjects such as child development, family and personal relationships, foods and nutrition, clothing construction and fashion, and interior design. You’ll complete a minimum of 120 credit hours which include 46 hours of education course requirements and 36 hours family and consumers sciences education requirements.

A grade of ‘C’ or better is required in education courses, with the exception of ED280 which requires a grade of ‘B’ or better.
(36-Hour Major - No Minor Required)
“Critical Courses” are italicized and bolded. Data shows that students who have completed this course in the first two years and have earned the noted grade are most likely to complete this program of study.
Some requirements may be fulfilled by coursework in major program.
