At SEMO, you'll prepare to become a licensed Family & Consumer Sciences educator, certified to teach K-12, while gaining the classroom experience to make an immediate impact. You'll learn to teach a variety of subjects, including:

In the family and consumer science education program students will increase their ability to act responsibly and productively, work cooperatively, apply concepts of balancing school/work and family, create solutions to critical and emergent issues, utilize technology effectively in personal and family settings, and maintain healthy lifestyles. Family consumer sciences (FCS) education provides the bridge needed by all students to deal with life and career issues (*AAFCS Rationale).

At SEMO, you'll prepare to teach topics like child development, nutrition, personal finance, family relationships, housing, fashion, and consumer decision-making while earning your Missouri K-12 teaching certification. Through classroom instruction and field experiences, you'll learn how to help students connect everyday life skills with future career opportunities.
Currently, job demand for family and consumer science education teachers at the middle school and high school level is very high. The majority of our Family & Consumer Science majors receive offers of employment even before graduation!
