Charles’ teaching is built on collaborations with fellow members of LAByrinth Theater Company in New York, on five cherished years of training with William Esper and Maggie Flanigan in the Meisner technique, on directing several world premieres by playwrights Stephen Adly Guirgis and Brett C. Leonard, on co-teaching with Philip Seymour Hoffman, and on the lessons he continues to learn from talented students across the country. As a member of LAByrinth, Charles has both directed and acted for the company for decades. He has taught acting and directing for LAByrinth, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Shenandoah Conservatory, Cornell University, the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory, and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, as well as for private studios in New York. For several years, he ran his own private teaching practice, where the training offered included the two-year progression of Meisner technique, Shakespeare, audition technique, and The New Works Studio, a course combining technique with rehearsals and performances of original new short plays in Hell’s Kitchen. Charles earned an MFA in Directing at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and has a BA in English Literature from Williams College. He is a member of AEA and SDC and a recipient of a fellowship from New York’s Drama League.
