Explain Your Career Path
As a PhD candidate in statistics, I have focused on developing strong analytical and computational skills to extract meaningful insights from complex data. My research emphasizes statistical modeling and Bayesian methods, bridging theory with real-world applications. I aspire to work as a statistician, using data-driven approaches to solve practical problems and inform decision-making.
What was your major at Southeast, and how would you characterize the quality of that program to prospective students?
I studied Mathematics. The program was both rigorous and supportive, providing a solid foundation in analytical thinking, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning. The faculty were approachable and genuinely invested in students’ growth, and the coursework prepared me well for advanced studies in statistics. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys critical thinking and wants solid preparation for graduate school or data-driven careers.
Why did you choose to attend Southeast?
I chose to attend Southeast because I liked the small, welcoming city and the peaceful campus environment. It felt like the right place to focus on my studies, build close connections with faculty, and grow both academically and personally without the distractions of a big city.
Who influenced you most during your time at Southeast?
Professor Emmanuel Thompson
Share your best college memory.
My best college memory was studying late at night with my friend Yao from China. We were always tired but laughing, helping each other tackle tough problems, and taking road trips to St. Louis and Carbondale. Those moments made the hard work feel lighter and the friendships even stronger.
What is the most important thing you learned while you were at Southeast?
The most important thing I learned at Southeast was how to think critically and approach problems with patience and persistence. It was not just about getting the right answer, but understanding the process and learning from mistakes along the way.
Describe Southeast in three words.
Supportive, Peaceful, and Inspiring.
What advice would you give current students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in your professional field?
I would say build a solid foundation in statistical theory and get as much hands-on experience with real data as you can. Learn to code well in R and Python, and do not avoid messy datasets. Stay curious, keep learning new methods, and stay open to collaboration. The field moves quickly, and being adaptable makes all the difference.
