Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Computer Science is introducing a new 8-week biflex (blended flexible) format for its graduate programs beginning fall 2026. This adds a new level of flexibility to the University’s master’s degree options and is designed to better serve today’s diverse student population.
The 8-week biflex format will begin with the graduate applied computer science and cybersecurity programs. Biflex is a dual-modality instructional format that allows students to attend each class session either in person or online. By offering accelerated 8-week courses, the program provides greater accessibility while maintaining the rigor of a traditional graduate education.
“This initiative reflects a commitment from the computer science faculty to better serve the evolving needs of our students,” said Dr. Kevin Dickson, professor and interim dean of HCBC. “By reducing barriers and expanding options, we aim to provide greater access to programs that students may not have otherwise been able to pursue.”
The new format is particularly beneficial for working professionals and non-traditional students seeking to advance their careers without interrupting their current responsibilities. Enrollment is now open for the fall 2026 semester, allowing students to prepare for success in a technology-driven workforce.

“We provide education that focuses on helping working professionals advance in their careers,” Dickson said. “We recognize the value of continuing education, and we are intentionally creating pathways like this to make it easier for students to return and succeed.”
The addition of biflex formats further expands how students can engage with their education. Courses may be completed fully online, fully in person, or through a biflex model that blends both environments. This approach ensures students can participate in a way that aligns with their personal and professional lives while maintaining academic quality and engagement.
The University continues to expand flexible, student-centered learning models that prioritize access, quality and real-world readiness.
The Harrison College of Business and Computing is supporting this momentum through ongoing initiatives that align academic offerings with industry demand and emerging technologies. Across HCBC and the broader University, SEMO continues to invest in modern academic structures designed to prepare students for a rapidly changing, technology-driven world.
Through innovations like the 8-week biflex format, SEMO continues to strengthen its role as a regional and national leader in higher education, committed to expanding opportunities and preparing students for a fearless future.
