Southeast Missouri State University is enhancing its campus experience with the approval of a new project at the heart of campus.

The University’s Board of Governors has authorized the redevelopment of the plaza in front of Kent Library, one of the most visible and heavily traveled spaces on campus. The Board approved naming the revitalized area “Talbert Terrace” in recognition of a gift from Dr. and Mrs. C.R. Talbert to fund the redevelopment.

This reimagined space is designed to foster connection and pride as well as create an enhanced gathering place for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The naming honors a legacy of generosity and impact from the Talbert family, whose commitment continues a tradition of supporting education and opportunity in the region.

“We are so appreciative of the generous gift from the Talbert family to help us reimagine the front door to the University, where so many of our campus events are centered,” said SEMO President Dr. Brad Hodson. “The ‘Talbert Terrace’ will greet families visiting campus, welcome our new students during Move-In Week, and serve as place for our community to gather.”

The Talbert Family
Clifford R. “Tim” Talbert Jr., MD, FACC, dedicated more than five decades to advancing cardiovascular care in southeast Missouri. Over a 57-year career, he pioneered life-saving procedures in the region, including early pacemaker implantation, cardiac catheterization, and coronary angiography. His work placed southeast Missouri on the leading edge of cardiac innovation and improved the lives of countless patients.

A graduate of Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Talbert completed his residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and a fellowship at the University of Missouri-Columbia before beginning his medical practice in 1965. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to service, innovation, and excellence, all values that align closely with the mission of Southeast Missouri State University.

Dr. Tim and Phyllis Talbert, as well as Dr. Talbert’s deceased wife Bettie, have been longstanding supporters of SEMO, consistently investing in initiatives that strengthen the University and expand opportunities for students.

Construction is anticipated to begin after the completion of the spring semester.
