The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Governors approved naming the University’s new observatory as the Vollink Family Observatory in recognition of a generous gift and longstanding support from Dennis and Kathy Vollink.
Dennis Vollink, a former pilot and engineer for Drury Southwest, dedicated over 40 years to the company before serving as its president until his retirement in 2022. A community leader, he has played a key role in numerous construction projects in Cape Girardeau, including the St. John Henry Newman Center, school expansions, and other local developments. He has also been actively involved in astronomy outreach, partnering with local educational institutions and organizations to promote science and exploration.
The Vollinks have been generous supporters of Southeast Missouri State University and the Southeast Missouri University Foundation, contributing to programs that benefit international graduate students, River Campus performances, KRCU Public Radio, and the University Fund. Dennis Vollink was also instrumental in the development of SEMO’s professional pilot program and played a vital role in the success of the University’s recent eclipse events. The couple are members of the University Foundation’s President’s Council, further demonstrating their commitment to SEMO’s mission.
Located near the Show Me Center on SEMO’s main campus, the Vollink Family Observatory will serve as a vital academic and outreach resource. The facility will support STEM programs and provide educational opportunities for students, faculty, and the greater Cape Girardeau community, fostering engagement with astronomy and space science.
“We are truly grateful for the generosity of Dennis and Kathy Vollink,” said SEMO President Dr. Carlos Vargas. “Their commitment to education, science, SEMO and our students has made a lasting impact, and it is fitting that this observatory will bear their name as a testament to their legacy.”
