Seventeen rising juniors visited Southeast Missouri State University on Wednesday, June 7 as a part of the Wyman Leaders program, which empowers teens from economically disadvantaged circumstances to lead successful lives.
The St. Louis area students toured the campus and met with admissions counselors and a student panel.
“It’s important for us to let them hear from actual students while they’re here on their visit,” said Lenell Hahn, director of Admissions. “Getting students to campus is a priority for us. We wanted to give the students from Wyman a feel for campus and let them ask questions about what being a Redhawk is really like.”
Students start the Wyman Leaders program the summer before their freshman and continue it throughout high school and the four years after graduation. This nine-year program helps students transition through the stages of their education, lead in their communities, and build positive relationships with adults in the region.
Southeast is celebrating its sesquicentennial, and Wyman is celebrating a milestone anniversary as well--it’s 125thanniversary. Wyman President and CEO Wyneken says she appreciates the history the organizations share.
“These tours are an important part of their postsecondary journey, ensuring that when it comes time for them to choose a school, they are choosing one that is a good fit for their needs and interests,” said Wyneken. “Our important and long-standing partnership with Southeast Missouri State University has made young people’s dreams of college reachable. The Wyman participants who attend SEMO thrive through their persistence, the University’s academic, financial, and social supports, and the commitment of the Wyman coaches and mentors. We look forward to many more years of partnership and many more Redhawk graduates.”
Southeast also offers a sophomore college bound program that allows any high school to bring prospective students for a campus visit and exploration of college options. Schools interested should contact the Southeast Office of Admissions.
