Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) will host Campus Safety Day Sept. 7 to promote campus and personal safety, disaster preparedness and crime prevention.
Campus Safety Day is scheduled from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Normal Avenue between Kent Library and Academic Hall. Normal Avenue will be closed between Pacific and Henderson streets.
"Campus Safety Day is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to interact with safety personnel and officers from the campus and local community," said Jyothi Dirnberger, crime prevention officer with University Police. "The day will provide educational awareness on keeping yourself safe.
“Visitors can learn about safety issues and prevention while interacting with local and campus law enforcement officers,” Dirnberger said. “Visitors can learn about the services and programs DPS and our local agencies provide, and even about possible careers and employment opportunity.”
University Police and DPS armed intruder training officers will provide information on the University’s safety services and programs, campus emergency procedures and the SE Alerts emergency notification system.
“Visitors will learn how University Police keeps our campus community safe and how they can be prepared for emergencies,” Dirnberger said.
Additional agencies participating include the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Cape Girardeau Police Department, Cape County Sheriff’s Office, Unite Arrive Alive Tour, Missouri Department of Transportation, Cape Girardeau Fire Department, Cape Girardeau County Emergency Management, Cape Girardeau County Public Health, Campus Prevention Resource Office, Safe House for Southeast Missouri, Southeast Missouri Network against Sexual Violence (SEMO NASV), and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu of Southeast Missouri, a mixed martial arts studio in Jackson.
