“Mom Jeans,” an exhibition of sculptural works by Southeast Missouri State University alumna Kristin Obermiller, is on view through May 6 at Catapult Creative House.
A reception will be held Friday, May 6 from 5 - 9 p.m.
Obermiller is a 2021 Southeast graduate, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in art with focuses in sculpture, woodworking and ceramics. She was born and raised in a Missouri rural farming area and currently resides and works in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Her current body of work confronts the social issues that women face, including the inevitability of getting old. Influenced by personal anxieties related to being a woman and mother, her sculptures explore self-objectification, ageism, self-esteem issues, cosmetic surgery and the challenge of staying relevant in today’s society.
Embracing an eclectic approach to materiality, Obermiller employs silicone, ceramics, wood, resin and expanding foam to create sculptural objects that are shiny, candy colored and alluring. These unconventional materials yield blobby, gummy and drippy results reminiscent of the aging body and the mystery substances women inject into themselves to maintain a youthful appearance, while also revealing the dark reality of insecurity and how women deal with the aging process.
Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
