“Personality,” an exhibition of portraits by Southeast Missouri State University student artist Mollie Bartlett, will be on view through March 4 at Catapult Creative House.
The exhibition reception is scheduled for Friday, March 4 from 5-9 p.m.
Bartlett is a freshman art major focusing on drawing, painting, mixed media and photography. She grew up in rural Scott County, Missouri, and attended Thomas W. Kelly High School.
Bartlett’s most recent series of portraits captures the personalities of loved ones, namely those who have had an impact on her life. The medium and artistic style of the individual pieces was specifically chosen for each person. In a piece titled “Joan,” Bartlett pays homage to her grandmother and her will to survive a months-long battle with COVID-19. Using bright colors and uncontrolled lines Bartlett captures the determination and sassy personality of her grandmother. Simultaneously, the expressive use of watercolor embodies the free spirit and inspiration of her subject.
As a part of a program to promote community-based and integrated art making, a student artist is chosen to exhibit his or her work at Catapult Creative House’s Student Studio Gallery each month. These exhibitions will showcase a range of work from individual artists that highlights their personal and professional artistic explorations as a part of the southeast Missouri art community. These artists explore the physicality of the human condition, its relationship to nature and the role of art in contemporary society.
Attendees are welcome to tour the entire Catapult facility including Southeast’s Department of Art and Design student studios and gallery. Visitors are also invited to browse the merchandise in the Catapult Creative House Shoppe, which features student work and regional business products.
Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
