The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus is hosting a “Peyote Stitch Beading” workshop Nov. 6-7.
The two-day workshop is open to ages 14 and older and will be held from 1-4 p.m. both days.Pre-registration and a $10 fee is required by Oct. 30 in-person or at semo.edu/museum.
The peyote stitch is a versatile pattern and can be learned easily. It is considered to be a form of quiet, mindful meditation for many beaders throughout the world. Ancient Egyptians used this pattern, but its modern name came from Kiowa and Comanche Tribes in the 1800s.
During this workshop, participants will decide how to use their new skill as either a flat pattern, a cylindrical design, or as embellishment on another item. This stitching can make pouches, necklace strands, earrings, bracelets, rattle grips or three-dimensional works of art, and has unlimited possibilities.
Basic peyote stitches for even and odd counts will be introduced. Examples will be shown.
The Crisp Museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau.
