The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museumat Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus will host a “BeginnersPleinAir Oil Painting ” workshopMay 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 8-10 a.m.

This event is open to participants between ages 16 and up. Workshop space is limited to 10 participants and a registration fee of $30 is required at
semo.edu/museum/education. Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place.

Supplies required include an 8″x10″ canvases, dual primary oil paint pallet plus white, black, and burnt umber, with a range of bristle and synthetic brushes, a paint knife, and odorless turpenoid in a sealable container.

The workshop hours are for instruction only.Each class starts by watching a demo painting. These will be in various locations. Discussion topics will include sight,composition, color mixing, wind, light constantly changing, wet canvas and pallet, and uneven ground.

PleinAir painting is done outdoors, and is historically afeature of French impressionism, said Ellen Flentge, curator of education, at Crisp Museum.It only takes an inspiration, a quick sketch, color mixing, and a simplified painting to capture the true brilliance of nature or attraction of a subject and more specifically, light. Each of those steps can contain tremendous amounts of knowledge.

Participants are encouraged to practice and paint outside of workshop hours, with additional assistance provided by the Museum Monday-Wednesday. Participants work will be shared during a critique at the beginning of each class.

The Crisp Museum is located in the Cultural Arts Center at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus, located at 518 S. Fountain St. in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
