The Mylla Fisk Markland Alpha Chi Omega Scholarship has been established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
Robert and Mylla Markland of Irmo, South Carolina, made a donation to establish the scholarship.
The renewable scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a member of Southeasts Delta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. The Universitys director of Greek Life, in conjunction with the Alpha Chi Omega Scholarship Committee, will select the recipient.
Mylla Fisk Markland graduated from Southeast in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in secondary biology education. As a student, she served as president of the Terpsichore Modern Dance Group in 1962, Rush Chair of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority in 1962 and president of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority in 1963. She was elected to Wakapa Womens Honorary Society and Whos Who in American Colleges and Universities publication in 1963. In 1975, she received a Master of Education in guidance and counseling from the University of Missouri St. Louis. She later completed more than 30 hours in special education/learning disability from the University of South Carolina.
Markland had a 39-year career as a science teacher and guidance counselor. She taught at Florissant Junior High School in Florissant, Missouri; Iroquois Middle School in Irondequoit,
New York; and A.C. Flora High School in Columbia, South Carolina. She was a guidance counselor at Pattonville Junior High School in St. Ann, Missouri; A.C. Flora High School; and Irmo High School in Columbia, South Carolina.
She was the varsity cheerleader sponsor at Florissant Junior High School from 1976-1979 and at A.C. Flora High School from 1980-1982. Markland was also the varsity girls tennis coach at A.C. Flora High School from 1982-1986. She was active within a number of professional organizations and particularly enjoyed her work with The College Board. In 1994, she was elected to Whos Who in American Education publication, and in 2002 was granted membership in The National Society of High School Scholars.
She married Robert Markland in 1965. They have two sons, Kevin and Keith, and 10 grandchildren. She has been a volunteer at Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens in Columbia, South Carolina, for the past 20 years. Active in her church, Ashland United Methodist, she has participated in many mission projects, vacation Bible schools, and is president of her Sunday school class.
