Southeast Missouri State University art students will present the May 6 After Hours: Conversations on Art and Culture lecture at Catapult Creative House.The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place. The event will also be available via Zoom at https://semo.zoom.us/j/98832628817.In their presentation, Awkward: Creating a Safe Space for Difficult Conversations in Art, the students will discuss the importance of accepting the uncomfortable in order to foster conversation, and the power artists have to communicate and bring awareness to important issues in our community.Student participants include Kaitlyn Abt,Morgan Clark,Lydia Gehrs,Neil Joiner,Blake King,Sarah Klump,Lauryn Moore,Logan Oleson,Brandon Pemberton,Melanie Reichert, andHope Ross.This semester, as part of Southeasts associate professor Hannah Sanders screenprinting class, the students focused on activism, outreach and printerventions, with projects centered around difficult and important topics such as racial justice, native land/territory acknowledgement, the environment and hunger in our community.This semesters After Hours topic is Artist/Activist.Artists have often served as the conscience of the culture to which they identify. Whether through documentation or interpretation, they are often the catalyst by which political and social issues are perpetuated. This series will feature creatives who have made work such as visual art, film, poetry, or prose about issues affecting their communities.After Hours: Conversations on Art and Culture lectures take place at Catapult Creative House. These lectures are free and open to the public. Attendees are welcome to tour the entire Catapult facilities including the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art and Design students studios upstairs, as well as the Catapult Creative House Shoppe, which features student work and local business products.Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway, Cape Girardeau, MO. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
