Southeasts Supplemental Instruction (SI) program was recently awarded Accredited SI Program status by the International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). The accreditation, which Southeast earned in November, recognizes the University for its outstanding SI program and marks Southeast as the second such accredited institution in Missouri.Supplemental Instruction is provided through Learning Assistance Programs, a part of the Academic Support Centers (ASC). Supplemental Instruction supports students in academically rigorous courses with high rates of D, F and W grades by offering twice weekly group study sessions.Having an accredited SI program brings prestige to our work within the Academic Support Centers. This is a very challenging and selective application process, said WyKeshia Atkins, director of Learning Assistance Programs. Receiving the ICSI accreditation means that our program has met the standards of UMKC, the university that originated SI. It is an incredible honor.SI sessions are facilitated by peer SI Leaders who have previously taken the course and earned a grade of A or B. SI Leaders attend the course alongside students and then plan engaging activities focused on peer-to-peer learning and processing for their sessions.In additional to the SI Leaders who execute the sessions, there is another group who aides in the success of Southeasts Supplemental Instruction program: SI faculty members."Without our SI Leaders and the faculty members who work alongside them, we would have never received this recognition.
