Southeast Missouri State University alumna and local artist Ashley Sexton will discuss the evolution of her artwork in the Nov. 12 After Hours: Conversations on Art and Culture lecture at Southeasts Catapult Creative House.
Sexton, an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on found object assemblage and DIY (do it yourself) public practice projects, will present By Any Means Necessary: DIY Meets Fine Art. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Sexton will explain how her art making evolved into the public practice she considers it to be now. She will also discuss how she uses DIY and grassroots ideas to bring those projects to life. Additionally, she will discuss the steps it takes to get from an initial idea, to the realization of a project.
Sexton earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from Southeast in 2019. While at the University, she served as Catapult Creative Houses Gallery Manager. She has shown her artwork both locally and regionally. She currently serves as the assistant director and exhibitions coordinator at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
This semesters After Hours topic, The Business of Art: Artists as Entrepreneurs, reminds participants that many artists are independent contractors who, in addition to creating art, must exhibit and market their work. The key is to understand the differences between strategies and venues in order to succeed as an entrepreneur. The speakers for this semesters series will expound on the intricacies of various institutions, such as galleries, museums and non-profit organizations.
After Hours: Conversations on Art and Culture lectures take place at Catapult Creative House and are free and open to the public. Attendees are welcome to tour the entire Catapult facilities, including the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art and Design students studios upstairs, as well as the Catapult Creative Shoppe, which features student work and local business products.
Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
