Cheyenne Hendershott, a senior applied mathematics and statistics major from Marble Hill, Missouri, has been awarded the Waldemar J. Trjitzinsky Scholarship sponsored by the American Mathematical Society (AMS).

The $3,000 scholarship is awarded to approximately eight students from various AMS member institutions every year. As a winner of the scholarship, a photo and short biography of Hendershott will appear in a future issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.

Hendershott said, I feel very honored and humbled to be awarded this honor. I was selected to receive it by Southeast mathematics faculty. This validates my decision to switch majors from engineering to applied mathematics because I have been noticed for being a great student in a major that I enjoy.

Dr. Dan Daly, chair of Southeast’s Department of Mathematics and professor of mathematics, said, The Department of Mathematics is very proud of Cheyenne and all she has accomplished. I think it is wonderful that she was able to receive this scholarship. She is a creative thinker and a tremendously hard worker. Her ability shows that she will go as far in mathematics as she wants to go.

She chose Southeast because of its academic opportunities, Hendershott said.

My major, applied mathematics, excites me because math has always been one of my favorite subjects, she said. I am very organized and I love thinking systematically. Mathematics is one of the areas where I get to use those skills and learn to use them in various aspects of math.

After graduating in spring 2021, Hendershott hopes to find a career that will allow her to use her talent for mathematics.

After graduation, my goal is to find a job that allows me to use my mathematics skills, she said. Until graduation, my goals as a student are to maintain my high GPA and continue to learn more about different aspects of mathematics.
