The Center for Faulkner Studies at Southeast Missouri State University has published a new book of essays, Faulkner and Garca Mrquez, through the Southeast Missouri State University Press. The book features essays from 10 different scholars who analyze and compare the fiction and lives of two Nobel Prize-winning authors, William Faulkner and Gabriel Garca Mrquez. The essays were originally presented at the Faulkner and Garca Mrquez Conference held in October 2018 on the Southeast campus. The biennial conference always pairs Faulkner and another author, said Dr. Christopher Rieger, director of the Center for Faulkner Studies. This was the first time that we paired Faulkner with an author from outside the United States, said Rieger. Gabriel Garca Mrquez was inspired by Faulkner as a young writer, and he went on to create his own masterpieces that rival anything written in the twentieth century.Garca Mrquez is best known for his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, though several of his other works are also compared to Faulkners novels and short stories, Rieger said.We were thrilled to have a diverse group of essays that compare these two authors in a variety of ways, Rieger said. The book includes scholars from around the country, as well as from Taiwan and Japan. The book was a collaboration between the Center for Faulkner Studies and the University Press, which has published the previous six books in the series. Southeast students gained valuable experience by working on all stages of the books production, said Dr. James Brubaker, director of the University Press.Students were able to help with the layout and design of this book, as well as proofreading and copyediting, Brubaker said. The book can be purchased through the University Press website at semopress.com.
