The Masked Creature of Dreams, featuring the work of Southeast Missouri State University student artist Matthew Breeden, is the first exhibit in the Student Artist of the Month Fall 2020 exhibition season at Southeasts Missouri State Universitys Catapult Creative House.
The exhibition is currently on view on the second floor of Catapult Creative House. A closing reception will be held from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4. Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place.
From thumbnails and polished design sketches to a final digital painting, Masked Creature of Dreams is a journey through Breeden artistic process, one that gives the viewer an exclusive behind-the-scenes look of painting.

Inspired by mythology and influenced by Brian Frouds fantastically dark illustrations and playful conceptual designs, Breeden, a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in digital arts from Wellsville, Missouri, creates a documentation of sketches that come to life. His artwork displays multiple viewpoints of the creature and showcases unique features specifically for the viewer to notice. All of Breeden’s digital prints blur the lines between character study and resolved work, ultimately allowing each piece to stand on its own.
As part of a program to promote community-based and integrated art making, a student artist is chosen to exhibit his or her work at Catapult Creative Houses Student Studio Gallery each month. These exhibitions showcase a range of work from individual artists that highlights their personal and professional artistic explorations as part of the southeast Missouri art community. These artists explore the physicality of the human condition, its relationship to nature and the role of art in contemporary society. In addition to the exhibition, attendees are welcome to tour the studio spaces, view ongoing projects and engage with the artists.
Catapult Creative House is located at 612 Broadway, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. All gallery exhibitions, events and talks are free and open to the public.
