Logan Phillips, president of the Student Government Association (SGA), updated the Regents Sept. 25 on the current and ongoing work of Student Government this semester.
The SGA has held two meetings thus far this semester, and students have been appointed to various committees. For the first time in a number of years, all the Senate seats have been filled by the first meeting, Phillips said.
SGA has met with university officials and Information Technology to explore a mass text messaging system that would educate students and faculty about different events around campus to promote improved communication.
Phillips said SGA formed a SE Link Evaluation Committee to review options for student organizations to better promote student involvement on campus.
The Diversity and Inclusion Committee is working with The Division of Equity, Access and Behavioral Healthand Sonia Rucker, vice president for equity, access and behavioral health, to develop opportunities for SGA to be involved in their diversity and inclusion training.
SGA is also continuing to collaborate with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to provide events and opportunities that connect students with DPS officers.
Phillips concluded by saying SGA is happy to be back on campus and attending in-person classes, and is looking forward to the rest of the fall semester with more programming and events.

In response to a question about what SGA has heard from students about the fall semester, Phillips said they have concerns about no breaks built into the fall academic calendar, however student understand why the academic calendar was changed to allow in-person classes to come to a close prior to the Thanksgiving break and limit students exposure to the virus during holiday-related travel and the potential for transmission thereafter.
Phillips said he has met with Southeast President Carlos Vargas to discuss ways the University and SGA can mitigate students stress during the rest of the fall semester as well as during the planning of the spring semester.
The Regents expressed appreciation for the SGA and all Southeast students efforts to support and follow the health and safety measures implemented on campus.
