The Show Me Center, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, will sponsor a Community Blood Drive July 8-9 to help supplement summer blood shortages.Eligible donors are urged to donate.The blood drive will be held from noon to 6 p.m. both days. A blood donor card or drivers license, or two other forms of identification, are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.The blood drive will help address the urgent need for blood donations as hospitals resume surgeries and treatments that require blood products. The American Red Cross needs to collect approximately 13,000 pints of blood every day to maintain an adequate blood supply at hospitals across the country.To schedule an appointment, visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter the sponsor code SHOWMECENTER.As part of its screening, the American Red Cross is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies, providing donors insight into whether they have been exposed to this coronavirus.Antibody testing, authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a limited time, will indicate if the donors immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Donations will be tested using samples pulled at the time of donation and sent to a testing laboratory where they will also undergo routine infectious disease testing. A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity.
