Outgoing Student Government Association (SGA) President Matt Rolwing and Incoming SGA President Logan Phillips updated the Regents on the work of Student Government during the spring semester and its 2020-2021 goals.Rolwing said because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Universitys transition to remote delivery of coursework, the SGA transitioned its work online as well.SGA Executive Board and committee leaders remained actively engaged and dedicated to continuing their mission to support students. It was an honor to work with them, he said. The SGA focused its outreach efforts though its social media platforms. Throughout the spring semester, SGA posted Shout-Outs recognizing faculty and staff for their support and dedication to students. The Student Issues Committee continued its collaboration with Southeasts Counseling and Disability Services, posting weekly mental health wellness tips and information as well as promoting the telehealth services available through Counseling and Disability Services.SGA also continued its partnership with DPS. Despite having to cancel its spring events, including Self-Defense training and Popcorn with the Police, SGA continued to communicate and collaborate with DPS, and recently posted to its social media accounts a video featuring DPS staff and officers wishing students good luck on finals and messages that they are missed on campus. This video has been viewed more than 2,000 times, Rolwing said, and he is encouraged by DPSs willingness to continue to work with SGA.The Diversity and Inclusion Committee created and shared on the SGA social media accounts a You Belong Here flyer to foster diversity and inclusion on campus and to bridge the gap between different student groups. These posts were also very well received, Rolwing said.SGA conducted two meetings this semester and approved bylaw revisions and recognized Jim Essner, budget analyst with Campus Life and Event Services, as an honorary senator. Additionally, the new Executive Board for fall 2020 has been sworn in and Rolwing said he is excited to see campus leaders already engaging in ideas for next year that were disrupted this semester.Rolwing also thanked the Board of Regents, noting that his presentations and meetings with its members have been a highlight of his tenure as SGA president. He then introduced incoming SGA President Logan Phillips, a sophomore double major in corporate communication and political science from St. Louis, Missouri. He previously served as a senator for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and was inspired by his tenure as a Senator to get more involved in SGA and represent students across campus, he said.SGAs goals for next year will include continuing to focus on recycling and sustainability issues to make the campus more environmentally friendly; increasing school pride by working with athletics to co-sponsor giveaways; consolidating information from SE Link, the Portal and SEMO app to create an organized, updated webpage accessible to students from the Universitys website; and improving intercampus communication to raise awareness about campus events, particularly those at the River Campus.Phillips said he is excited to begin work this summer and next year hopes to continue improving student life at Southeast.
