The Holland College of Arts and Media at Southeast Missouri State University will host Lloyd Caldwell for a masterclass presentation in rapier and dagger on Friday, Oct. 4The class, scheduled from noon- 2 p.m. in the Kenneth and Jeanine Dobbins River Campus Center Room 114, is an opportunity for Southeast students to work on their stage combat skills with an internationally recognized fight choreographer.Caldwell is a founding member of the International Order of the Sword and Pen. He has previously been invited to guest lecture for prestigious American theatre programs at Columbia University and Pace University, as well as theatre programs in Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.There are fight directors out there who are not actors, and it shows, says Caldwell. Modern actors are going to have to do action sequences, whether its a play, television or film, and theyll have someone come in to give them the basic skills. When they leave my class, I want them to be able to perform a dramatic scene that involves physical contact.Caldwells 30-year career includes credits in off-Broadway productions, regional productions, and in feature films and television. He portrayed John Adams in the national tour of 1776. Through his company, Bladework, he has provided a variety of services to major production companies such as Universal Studios, Kings Productions, NBC, CBS, the BBC and RTE.Lloyd is a master fight director who has a unique perspective on both the acting profession as well as fight directing and violence choreography, says Bart Williams, associate professor of acting and stage combat at The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance. Lloyd knows everyone in the fight business and a word from him could potentially get a young performer a job. He is also an expert at nurturing young fight directing talent.Caldwell earned a Master of Fine Arts in acting from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a Bachelor of Arts in history form the University of Cincinnati. He currently teaches at Oklahoma State University as a professor of performance. He is also writing a book that focuses on the business of fight directing.
