Southeast Missouri State University will celebrate Integrity Week across campus Sept. 6-13 with events, workshops and speakers to promote ethical, honest practices in the academic, work and personal lives of the campus community.

Integrity Week events are open to all Southeast students, faculty and staff.

The goals of Integrity Week are to reinforce the importance of integrity across campus life, provide students skills and strategies needed to make ethical decisions, and promote integrity, honesty and ethical behavior in life decisions outside of campus, said Dr. Sally Carter, director of Testing Services at Southeast.

Throughout the week, an Integrity Display of inspirational quotes will be in the University Center lobby. Markers will be available with the exhibit for the campus community to contribute their thoughts and comments about integrity.

Integrity Week events include:

Protecting Your Speech Presentation and Discussion
Sept. 9, 11-11:50 a.m., Forrest H. Rose Theatre in Grauel Building

Dr. Pam Parry, professor and chair of the Department of Mass Media, and Dr. Tamara Buck, advisor to the Arrow, multimedia journalism coordinator and associate professor of mass media, will discuss the many challenges and threats to the First Amendment today and why it is important to keep these rights protected under the amendment.

Our conversation will be informal and we will help attendees think critically about the right to free speech, press, religion, assembly and petition, Parry said. I cannot imagine anyone better to address this topic with than Dr. Buck. We’re both die-hard believers in the First Amendment and the Bill of Rights.

Dr. Monica Radu

Student Cheating from a Sociological Lens: How Students Perceive Academic Integrity Presentation and Discussion
Sept. 9, 1-2 p.m., University Center Ballroom B

Dr. Monica Radu, assistant professor of sociology, presents a sociological lens to better understand how students perceive academic integrity and dishonesty. The article she will discuss, Student Cheating: A Dramaturgical Analysis of Identity, Deception, and Self-deception by Susan. A. Stearns, draws from a sample of 72 students from across the nation who were asked to participate in a survey regarding academic integrity.

I think the participants answers to the survey questions are going to be relatable for students, which hopefully will spark a really interesting conversation following the presentation, Radu said. I want students to leave Southeast with integrity, valuing honestly, and living by a set of principles that they can be proud of.

Salinger, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee and “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck.

In each of the novels chosen, there are instances where a character displays integrity, Baken said. We will use the books and characters as talking points when discussing the aspects of integrity.
