Native Americans in southeast Missouri will be the focus of the Sept. 3 installment in the Talks on Tuesday series in the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State Universitys River Campus.
Dr. Adam Criblez, associate professor of history and anthropology and director of the Center for Regional History, will give the presentation as part of the Crisp Museums Archaeology Month celebration at 7 p.m. The presentation is free and open to the public.
During his lecture, Criblez will explore the Native American experience in the region that became southeast Missouri, from the arrival of Paleo-Indians to the removal of the Cherokee thousands of years later. He will discuss the influx of Native Americans prior to European exploration, the rise and decline of the Mississippian culture centered in nearby Cahokia, Illinois, and the arrival and removal of post-contact Native Americans concluding with the infamous Trail of Tears.
Criblez earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Ohio Wesleyan University, a Master of Arts in history from Kent State University and a doctorate in history from Purdue University. He is the author of Parading Patriotism: Independence Day Celebrations in the Urban Midwest, 1826-1876 and Tall Tales and Short Shorts: Dr. J, Pistol Pete, and the Birth of the Modern NBA. His work has also appeared in several publications, including the Journal of Sport History, Journal of American History, the Missouri Historical Review, and On the Move: The Encyclopedia of Immigration, Migration, and Nativism in United States History.
Additionally, Criblez is director of the Bollinger Center for Regional History and Cultural Heritage which serves the University and the region through its work in documenting, preserving, and presenting various aspects of local and regional history; architectural trends; archaeology; and ethnic and folk traditions. Members of the Center staff provide assistance to museums, historical societies, schools and a number of city, county, state and national agencies.
